Hi,

We are planning to invest in the Odoo community edition to develop enhancements around the accounting and the project module and to publish it as a web application (SaaS).

Odoo on V8 is using AGPL which was designed to force SaaS providers to publish the modified version of Odoo. However, From version 9 onwards, It moved to LGPLv3. [3]

We are planning to start using V14 community edition. Key question is that if we develop a series of modules to modify the community edition to build a "product " and make it ready to ship in a form of SaaS, are we required to publish the source code or not ?

Quick preliminary investigation shows that we don't need to publish it.

"the Affero General Public License, which requires anyone using the software to offer services to offer the source code to everyone that can access the services.
But as far as plain GPL and LGPL are concerned, a web-based product is an internal application that doesn’t incur any requirement to distribute the source."

Also in a Q/A in stackexchange, about Using GPL or LGPL licensed framework for web application, There is a response that says :

"Running an application on a server is never considered distribution, and you're not bound by the terms of the LGPL for distribution. The only widely used open source license which puts obligations on you when you run software on a server and let users interact with it is the AGPL" [2]

Please suggest.

Hello!

We face the same issue in our society. We are customizing some modules from Odoo 15 to adapt its use to our members' needs, and we will offer them as SaaS to them, and we are unsure of which license to use.

@Mike Andreson, which license did you choose, at the end? How did it go?

Thanks,
