You don't have to use the HTML editor, It is easy to do trough the administration UI. From your website's home, Go to "Website Admin > Configuration > Settings" and scroll down, you'll see the option to change the favicon under the "Advanced" menu.

You may have to logout from Odoo (...even clear your browser data to remove the cached images) for the changes to take effect.
