Hi.  This is my first post to this forum.

I am really new to Odoo.  So far it's pretty slick!

I am familiar with using CRM's like SugarCRM and SalesForce.  I am trying to get my head around using Odoo as a CRM.  Can anyone recommend any walk throughs or documentation on the structure of Odoo in relation to CRM's?

It depends on how you are going to be using it, what OS, what service (web or local), what modules (CRM, Warehouse, Sales, Accounting) you must remember Odoo is huge and you cannot simply read a few pages to fully understand all of it. Documentation was fairly sparse but is improving, as is Odoo itself.

If you are developing - useful reference information can be found at https://www.odoo.com/documentation/8.0/reference/orm.html

If you are simply using on the front end, or just need tips on installations:
http://odorials.com/tutorials/general/how-to-start-using-odoo/

https://doc.odoo.com/contents/ - I believe this is V7 documentation, but should translate fairly well to V8

There are not a lot of good walk-throughs.... however maybe you will document your experience from a new users perspective and write some blog posts to give back to the community.

I have tried to pull together information in a few forum posts that you may be interested in.

And one just for fun:

Peter!  You are the man!

Thank you.

I am using odoo on a VPS.  I am more or less looking at the CRM and Marketing functionality at first form a user / admin perspective.  I just want to make sure I am setting the CRM up correctly from the start.  I feels like there might be a paradigm shift from how other CRM's work.

Again, thank you!

It's fairly easy to set up, the module installation gets everything set up in the right place. If you aren't too sure on how or where you should create what, try creating a database with 'Load demonstration data:' ticked, and you'll get a bunch of test data that you can play around with. It should be pretty good to go out of the box though. From an administrators perspective, Settings -> Configuration -> Sales, and Settings -> Users -> Groups/Users would be a good start. You'll find lots of permission settings and groups already set up which restrict access to users, and options to add/remove functionality from modules. Most of the settings just add features, and there isn't really an incorrect way to set it up.

I appreciate the additional information.

The concern I am seeing for now is how contacts are set up with companies.  Trying to make sure I can import my accounts / companies and then the associate contacts.

I will definitely read through what you recommended!
