I need advice on how I setup ODOO for franchising businesses, multi-Company or multi-branch.

  1. What is the main difference between the two, accounting journals, etc?
  2. Is there a way to disable the sell function of the product to all companies except the primary? the object is to make the primary company the vendor that sells the products while other companies will just purchase the items.

Hi Jacky - as far as I know, the main difference is that branches have the same chart of accounts as the parent company. I haven't used it, so maybe someone else can add their experience with it.

It looks like company vs branch are the same. So my question is when do you consider creating a company or branch, what is the consideration that needs to be taken note? Is it because of accounting records per say or anything else?

In Odoo 17, branches are effectively the same as companies, except that they share the same chart of account.  The add-on referenced in another answer provides different functionality.

It should be simple customization to block sales orders in the other branches / companies, but obviously that's not allowed on Odoo Online.  It's also possible using Automated Actions (which are available in all online / saas) but it wouldn't be very user-friendly!

Customers could be setup only in the master company, but standard Odoo allows you to create sales orders for any contact (though that would be easy to fix in Studio if you have that).

Hi

Multi-Company: you can have one database for multiple companies, it can be used to share data like products and services, customers

Multi Branch: you can manage the operations of multiple branches of a single company. which will share data between these branches

Multi Branch

Multi Company
