I have custom shirts that I wish to manufacture.  Each customer can choose whatever they want to write on that shirt.  The shirts all have the same BOM - a white shirt and some quantity of ink.  Each shirt goes through the same work stations.

How can I setup the product so that I can sell it with custom instructions for what to write on the shirt, but keep the BOM and work operations common?  I want to create a sales invoice and have it automatically spawn the manufacturing order.

Do I have to create a unique "product" for each shirt? Each shirt is a unique finished product.  But if so, how can I make the BOM and work process common and not have to enter them every time?

Thanks @Lars Aam! Giving it a go. (I don't have enough cred to post beneath your comment)

Choose the combination of Make To order and Manufacturing as routes on your T-shirt with text.  On the product create an attribute with the following: Display type = Select, Variant creation mode = Never. And of course a BOM is necessary

Attribute value: Tick the box IS custom value.  Give it areated directly.  Open the Manufacturing order, and you find the field: Customer Description.

I tested this in version V15.  By default the route Make to Order was archived. So had to find it as archived and the unarchive.  Your case is one of few, where I would recommend Make to Order.  Your printed T-shirt can only be shipped for this sales order.
