I am thinking about, whether it makes sense to catch every new Odoo version and if the effort to do so pays off. Let's say you have a large odoo customization that is only being larger and there is a steady development taking place to build upon the Odoo kernel. Let's say you use the community edition and have to upgrade the database yourself. From Odoo 11 to Odoo 12 I recognized a big refactoring not only of the ui but also of the underlying models, so the whole codebase must be ported and tested thoroughly. There may be many unit tests that must be ported as well. Let's say you just use the core features of Odoo that never changes like order, invoice, purchase, ... Is it worth the effort to upgrade to every new version? What is your experience?

Hi,

Switching to higher version is completely the end users choice. In each each during the odoo experience the newer versions odoo13 is expected to release.

Suppose if you are using the odoo11 and you feel its enough for running your business then its fine for you and can stay in the same version itself. If you feel that odoo12 has much more speed and much more features which can make my business planning more stronger, then you can switch to the higher version.

During the release of odoo11, odoo11 is said 3 times faster than odoo1, like that there are many improvements taking place in each version. So if the Odoo1 user who is looking for a better speed can switch into the odoo11 which is having better speed during its release.

Also the odoo will only support(Bug Fixing) the previous three releases, currently the supported versions are odoo12, odoo 11 and odoo10. Once the Odoo 13 get released the support for the odoo10 will get end up. Still it will be available in the git to download and use.

So switching to the higher versions is purely end users choice. If you are okay with the current version and not potential to migrate to higher version, stay in the same. Else you can switch to the higher versions for better features and improvements.

Thanks

Generally speaking updating Odoo is always a good option if possible, but as you have said this is not always a practically feasible option, let alone not even required if the core features are used and hence there would'nt be any apparent benefit in upgrading the same.

But with that being said one of the chief factors in which Odoo itself is considered is because of its excellent support, which they have limited down to three most recent releases, and each version fundamentally improves the performance to relatively better levels than the previous ones. So it is advisable to keep Odoo updated to the most recent version as possible, and maybe consider upgrading  after every two releases if it is such a big hassle to do so.
