In real-world sales scenarios, the same product might require different fulfillment strategies depending on the customer or situation. Odoo supports this flexibility by allowing you to use both Make-to-Order (MTO) and Dropshipping within a single Sales Order. Here’s how to set it up:
Odoo is the world's easiest all-in-one management software.
It includes hundreds of business apps:
- CRM
- e-Commerce
- Accounting
- Inventory
- PoS
- Project
- MRP

1. Enable the Required Inventory Features
To start, go to Inventory > Configuration > Settings and activate:
- Storage Locations
- Multi-Step Routes
- Dropshipping
These features provide the foundation needed to manage different fulfillment flows.
2. Activate and Configure the MTO Route
Next, go to Inventory > Configuration > Routes.
- Filter to show archived routes, then unarchive Replenish on Order (MTO).
- Open the route and adjust the rule to:
Supply Method: "Take from Stock, if unavailable, Trigger Another Rule"
This ensures the system will trigger a purchase or production order when stock isn't available.
3. Allow Route Selection at the Sales Order Level
Still in the Routes configuration, find both the Dropshipping and MTO routes.
- Enable the Sales Order Lines option on each route.
This makes them selectable for individual product lines in a Sales Order.
4. Use Routes Per Line in a Sales Order
When creating a Sales Quotation or Sales Order, you’ll now see a Route field on each product line.
- Select Dropship for lines that should be shipped directly from the vendor.
- Select MTO for lines that should trigger a purchase or production order based on demand.
This means you can mix and match fulfillment methods—even for the same product—within the same order.
5. Automatic Fulfillment Based on Selected Routes
Once the order is confirmed, Odoo automatically generates the necessary backend documents based on the chosen route per line:
- Dropship lines will trigger Purchase Orders linked to Vendor Deliveries.
- MTO lines will generate Purchase Orders or Manufacturing Orders depending on your product settings.
For example, products P00003 and P00005 can be sent to the same customer or vendor—but one is dropshipped, and the other is fulfilled via MTO—seamlessly within one Sales Order.
