What is the logic behind such a constraint?

It does seem reasonable if you move from different distinct locations to the other.

But if you move goods from several Shelfs that are 5 meters apart -- it already seems to be an unwise constraint.

Can somebody with a deep understanding of picking's internals explain that?

And what are the pitfalls I should be aware of if I decide to remove this constraint?

There is the same constraint in destination location. Those constraints are present only in version 8, in version 7 you can have different destination locations and they are processed without problems.

This is also necessary when you have a picking from a purchase order with several products and you want to put them in different locations using one step reception.
