Hi,
We're using a custom activity type for document expiration dates.
You can define it by going to Settings>Technical>Activity Types.
Then, simply add your activity to the document and set the expiration date as the activity's due date.
It's not perfect, but it works well enough in a 100% standard Odoo setup
