Understanding inventory transfers with barcode app using Lot AND Product packaging

I'm having trouble understanding how the barcode app works with inventory transfers.

I am using Lot tracking for food manufacturing. I am also using packagings under the products.

I have FEFO set for location removal strategy. If I make an delivery transfer operation, pick my products which will automatically reserve the products to expire soonest and their lot codes in the order lines. I then mark it as to do.

Now when I go into the barcode app, it is displaying the reserved Lot numbers and prompts me to scan products.

I would like to use the system in the following manner:

1. Mandatory scan of product Packaging barcode (e.g Packaging which contains 20 units of dumplings) which will populate the quantity to green after all packagings have been scanned.

2. Mandatory scan of Lot barcode in order to validate the correct lot number was picked from inventory.

However, the system is jumping to Validate after the step 1. I have Lot/Serial number scanning set to Mandatory under the Operation Type settings -> Barcode App tab. I'm not sure what I'm missing or maybe I'm misunderstanding.

According to odoo's documentation:

https://www.odoo.com/documentation/18.0/applications/inventory_and_mrp/barcode/operations/transfers_scratch.html

"If the same lot or serial number is shared between different products, scan the product barcode first, then the barcode of the lot/serial number."

I believe this is the function I'm looking for. Is this a bug in v18?

I am producing units in batches with the Lot number applied during MO phase, e.g 100 dumplings. These batches are then packaged in 20 unit packages 100 = 5 packages.

Is this approach correct? Products are removed from inventory in partial quantities according to their packaging. However when I scan the Lot barcode it increments the quantity by one. I want to combine the use of the Lot barcode and the Packaging quantity barcode.

After further observation I noticed below:

There is a new checkbox for "Show reserved lots/SN?" in Odoo v18.

This is a bit misleading because what this feature is actually doing is pre-populating the Lot/SN field in the barcode app with the Reserved lot number. Not necessarily showing the reserved Lot/SN which is supposed to be picked.

If I uncheck this box, and leave mandatory scan on, then I am getting the behavior I want, which is that the employee LOOKS for the correct reserved lot number and is forced to scan it in order to populate the lot/serial number on the transfer.

The only downside is that the employee will need to read reserved lot number outside of the barcode app in order to know which lot to pick, which is fine. I can setup auto printing of picking slip to the printer in the warehouse. I will also likely modify the template of the picking slip to hide the lot barcode so the employee cannot scan it. Since this is food manufacturing, it's very important that the correct lots are physically picked.
