Currently we use Sage Line 50 and moving to Odoo (10, EE) - however I'm finding the VAT Return situation somewhat confusing vs Sage.

Example scenario below :

  • Run UK VAT Return (in this example scenario we'll just use September 2017). Result is Output VAT on Sales / EC acquisitions of £1341.73 + £910.52 = £2252.25, Reclaim on purchases of £1253.09, so a total repayment of £999.16 to be made

  • We enter VAT Journal (DR Sales VAT 220000, : £1341.73, CR Purchase VAT  220100 £1253.09 - £910.52 (EC purchases, as those are reversed at entry already) = £342.57, DR VAT Liability 220200 £342.57, CR VAT Liability 220200 £1341.73

  • After the above, we now have the correct balance on VAT Liability account which can be reconciled with the bank once payment is made

After completing the above steps - is there a way to mark / reconcile those individual VAT transactions (in particular those from 220100 - Purchase Tax Control Account) so we know they've been included in our filed VAT return?

What happens on some occasions is, we'll only get VAT invoices from some suppliers late, resulting in them having to be claimed on a future VAT return. In Sage 50's case it will alert to any transactions in previous periods that were added at a previous date but aren't flagged as reconciled for VAT (ie : not included on a VAT return thus far).

Hopefully the above makes sense and there's some solution available which isn't too complex!

Answering my own question here ...

Looks like I can reconcile the transactions under "Journal Items" after doing the VAT return - then simply match all the individual purchase tax input transactions against the VAT return journal.

That way any transactions in the future for the same period without a matching number - means they weren't included on a return previously.

Hi Jan,

I use account_move_lock module to lock account moves after vat return. Anything not locked in next vat quarter is a new entry. Hope it helps.
