subsidiary companies in res.partner (Odoo v17)

Question

In res.partner I have both child companies and parent companies. Can I use parent_id to handle this or is there another recommended method?

I seem to have encountered a similar logic when importing subsidiary organizations (whose parent_id was filled in). On import, the companies turned to be contacts (?!). I then updated the field to turn them back to companies.
