Not certain how to begin but seems like it should be possible...

The FIRST time a visitor sees the home page, I would like to offer the visitor a choice of two buttons, such as Red or Blue.

When the visitor chooses Red for instance, they are redirected to page Red.

In the future, when the Red visitor hits home again, they are redirected immediately to the Red page without being offered a choice again.

Has anyone done this? 

I can guess at a couple of different approaches, setting cookies or storing something in the db, but someone must have done this before.

What is the most efficient way to accomplish this?
