We have a product that goes to the subcontractor to be made and then sent back to us. We provide some of the components to the subcontractor and the rest they provide from their own supply. Should I add those components that the subcontractor provide from their supply in our BoM in Odoo? If yes, how should I do that?!
Odoo is the world's easiest all-in-one management software.
It includes hundreds of business apps:
- CRM
- e-Commerce
- Accounting
- Inventory
- PoS
- Project
- MRP

So, should I make another product for the components that the subcontractor provides? And is this product marked as "service" ?
Can't I just add the components that the subcontractor provides in the same BoM and just add quantities as zero?
Hello Dorsa,
Yes, you should include the components that the subcontractor provides in your Bill of Materials (BoM) in Odoo. This helps in tracking the complete list of materials required for the final product.
To add components provided by the subcontractor to your BoM, you can create a separate BoM for the subcontracted operation. Here's how you can do it:
- Create a Product for Subcontracted Work:
- If you haven't already, create a product in Odoo for the work that is subcontracted. This product represents the service provided by the subcontractor.
- Go to Manufacturing > Master Data > Bill of Materials.
- Create a new BoM for the product that goes to the subcontractor.
- Add the components that you provide in the BoM as usual.
- For the components that the subcontractor provides, you can add them as well, but set their quantity to 0.
- When you create a manufacturing order for the product, include both the BoM for the components you provide and the subcontracted operation BoM.
- This way, the system will track the components you provide, as well as the subcontracted operation.
- Once the subcontractor completes the work and returns the product, you can receive it into your inventory.
- This will update the stock levels and complete the manufacturing process in Odoo.
This approach allows you to manage the entire manufacturing process, including subcontracted operations, in Odoo while keeping track of all components involved.
Hope it helps
