I'm going round in circles here please help. I want to be able to search products and, as well as name, price and on hand, I really need to know, right there and then, where they are as regard location. Surely this is the most used verbal command in a warehouse - "Pick me 3 of thos things that are on ailse, row, shelf"?

2 clicks 2 many. We are busy in the warehouse and need to do a search for a product and have it's location right there alongside price and on hand.
Odoo already tells you all that info on the product page. Check at the top-left corner for "On Hand", and there you will see where those units are stored. If they are not you must be missing something.
What is your settup? Did you enable "Storage Locations" and "Multi-Step Routes"? (Enable them on Settings->Inventory->Wharehouse)
Once enabled you can then create those locations and sublocations. Once this is done you can then set putaway-rules for each product and tell odoo where you want to store everything, and once a product goes into your inventory it will be saved on that spot.
