Latest copies of the master trunk (just prior to v8 release) show the website sales team set up - but how does odoo know that this particular sales team is the one that gets the credit for sales via the ecommerce front-end ? I cannot see any specification on the team settings that makes this association.

This sale team is fixed in the code, it is not something that is configurable in version 8.
update: however, in master (future v9), it has changed and will now be the sale team specified on the website configuration.
According to Martin this will be more readily changeable in v9
That sadly true :

I did delete the Website Sales Team and know I can't reattach an new group to the incoming messages from the contact form.
Or is there somwhow a workaround?
