How to Set Customer-Specific Product Names

Note: This configuration is for Odoo 18+. For the solution on Odoo 17 and earlier, please see below

Use Case: I need to quote my customers using different product names.

Step 1: Enable Developer Mode

Go to General Settings > Manage Languages and activate developer mode.

Step 2: Duplicate the Default Language

Inside the database, duplicate the default language.

Step 3: Rename the Duplicated Language

Change the duplicated language name to match the customer you want to assign a different product name for.

Step 4: Assign the Language to the Customer

Go to the Contacts app and set the customer’s language field to the duplicated language (e.g., "Deco Addict").

Step 5: Export Translations

  • Path: Settings > Translations > Export / Translation

  • Select the language you want to export (⚠ only one language at a time).

  • Choose the format: CSV.

  • In Model to Export, select the relevant model.

  • Click Export to download the file (e.g., en_us.csv).

Step 6: Edit the CSV File

  • In the SRC column: the original product name (default language) will appear.

  • In the Value column: enter the new product name for the duplicated language.

  • Save the CSV file once all translations are added.

Step 7: Import Translations

  • Path: Settings > Translations > Import / Translations

  • Enter the duplicated language name and code.

  • Click Upload Your File and select the edited CSV.

  • The translations will be imported into Odoo.

Step 8: Validate the Result

Go to the product template and confirm that the new product name is linked to the duplicated language (e.g., "Deco Addict").

  • When you create a quotation for this customer, Odoo will use the default product name.

  • When you send the quotation (in PDF or preview), it will display the customer-specific product name.

Alternative Solution for Odoo 17 and Earlier Versions

Step 1: Go to the Inventory application and open the product template.

Navigation path: Inventory > Products > Products > Select the product template.

Step 2: In the Purchase tab of the product template, add the customer contact. Then, in the Vendor Product Name field, enter the desired product name so it appears correctly for the customer.

Step 3: To verify that the change has been applied successfully, create a quotation as an example. The product name should now display as defined in the Vendor Product Name field.
