This module would be really useful to send private unrelated messages: https://apps.odoo.com/apps/modules/9.0/internal_thread/

To detail Eva's answer some more.

When you have created your lead. You can go under the white box with all information regarding your lead and click on the text "Send a mail".

It is located in between the white box and your followers and the line says "Send a mail" or "Make a note".

If you click send a mail then it opens up a little text box. If you want to have more options then press on the square on the right top just above the text box. This will let you use templates which have been pre installed or created by you. And gives you a text editor with more options.

One thing to keep in mind when using this function is that it will send this mail to all of your leads followers and the e-mail adresses you enter (they have to be specified in your system already or else OpenERP will ask you to create them)

The only way to send a completely random e-mail is like Eva already mentioned. You go to Settings -> Under the section header Technical click on E-mail and then messages.

When you pressed the create button you will get a form which allows you to send random e-mails to anybody you want (as long as they are specified or you create them on the go).

Make sure to add in the FROM field, because this will be the e-mail adress it will show in your recipients Sender section.

I hope this makes it clearer. If not please let me know, I can make you a small tutorial with pictures.

Good Luck,

Michael

Update: I now understand what you want to do. Is it possible that you create a sub context in your dashboard with a direct link to the send msg under techinical setting? This way they don't have to dig in your settings and they can have a fast link in one click when they are at their dashboard(starting page). Is that a viable solution for you? If so, but you don't know how to do this, just leave a comment and I will make a detailed description for this. Hoped I helped you with this. Michael

I'm aware of how to send a mail using "send a mail" right under "Lead", "Invoice" etc. This is good when the mail are within an existing business process. The message handling system are one selling point of Odoo. It works best when you let Odoo do all alias handling and use one "catchall"-account for your domain. Every new project gets a new unique mailaddress, every new user and so on. In earlier versions you had a generic mailform without "followers" that you could use when sending a mail before starting the business process or mail not related to any business process. This is important to have because if you want to implement Odoo message handling in an organisation you can't deliver two systems, one integrated in Odoo and one separated for generic mails.

It seems to be a big blunder here. There will be many mail sent to the wrong people here, especially by OpenERP-users using Odoo 8x. It looks like when OpenERP SA droped caldav - idiotic - hundreds of angry openerp-users... If there are no "official" way to get back the mail icon or a mail composer without followers there is a place for a new module doing that. If you know where I can find the code for, for example the old mail-icon-solution to get this back.

Hello,

As Odoo is a management system, the sending of an e-mail should be somehow related to business processes in the company. So best practice would be if you want to send an e-mail to a lead, you create the lead and put the e-mail address in it and then you can send a "random" e-mail to this lead. If you want to send a mail to a customer, you can select the customer and then in the bottom, you may be able to send him a message. If you want to send an e-mail to a supplier, you will do the same. If you want to send an e-mail to an employee, you will search the employee and then press the send  message link.

If you need to send an e-mail to a high number of people, you may want to use the CRM campaign module.

If you REALLY want to send an unrelated message, then you can go to the settings, technical/email/messages and press the button create.

Good luck!

I just want users of Odoo to have the opportunity to send generic mail. When you implement Odoo in an organisation and its business processes you start with a few processes and when you get them work you go with the rest least important business processes. In the view of messagehandling this means that you start with 20 % of business process related mail and 80 % generic, to end up with 80/20 (or 95/5). But still a regular user has to have the opportunity to send a generic mail, and it is most important at the beginning of the implementaiton. You don't want to introduce double mailsystem and a regular user does not have the settings menu at all.
