I have a client who has a quite detailed nominal ledger with about 35 income accounts representing their sales categories, with corresponding expense accounts.
I want to create an annual budget for them, which they can analyse on a month-by-month basis. From the articles and videos I've looked at, I think I would need to create a Budgetary Position for each income account for each month (35 x 12) as well as an Analytic Account for each expense account (another 35 x 12). This seems like an extraordinary amount of work. Am I misunderstanding? I understand I need to define the periods for the budget but when my Budgetary Positions and Analytic Accounts will be direct one to one relationships with my revenue and expense accounts for each sales category, the extra layer of Budgetary Positions and Analytic accounts seems superfluous. In this case, it would be much easier if I could just create a monthly budget directly on each account. Is this possible?
The outcome I'm seeking is to produce P&L budget v actual, as well as monthly chart reports such as sales per sales category actual v budget. Thanks
Odoo is the world's easiest all-in-one management software.

You don't have to create any Analytic Accounts with the Budget framework you are working with unless you wish to have the budget monitor the entries in the Analytic Ledger, (which means Invoices and Bill lines are being tagged with Analytic Accounts).
An easier option for Budgeting (available in version 14) is to use an Odoo Spreadsheet.
The Documents App provides templates that get you started:
With a Profit and Loss Statement like this:
You can manage a Budget like this:
The sheet will pull in as many accounts as are in the Chart, based on their type.

Thank you very much Ray. I hadn't come across Spreadsheets yet and this will be immensely useful. Would you know whether it is possible to import budgets to the spreadsheet? The one I'm working on at the moment has 960 line items so I'm not keen to manually enter them. Cheers
You cannot import into an Odoo Sheet, but you can import the budget lines, then insert all of them onto a new tab in the same sheet, and use formulas to reference them.
