How to add a large number of variants without Odoo hanging.

Question

This is a really fustrating problem. I have products with large
number of variables. One of my products will have 6 properties with
between 2 and 8 variables each. One of my products is at 1400 variants.
That doesn't seem like that much. I need to add one more property with 4
variables so it should be a total of 5600 variants. Odoo has hung every time.
I'm currently running the community edition of 9 on virtualbox. The box has access to 2 cores (i5-4690k) and 4gb of memory.

There are 2 options:
- Increase the timeout so this action can complete.
- Create in a spreadsheet and import manually (preferred, but more complicated). You will find explanations on how to do this online.
I have a client that has approximately 100,000 variants but we had to import manually.
