I am getting started with odoo and im trying to figure the best way to set up the MRP for our company. We are a wholesale clothing brand, we use our own designs and print on apparel.

an example t-shirt product consists of a blank shirt (DM130 / Maroon / XS) and a design (MTG2301), I would like to be able to communicate the design details such as ink color, number of passes, whether or not a PFP process is needed, or any other notes regarding each design, this should be able to be added to by employees as things arise.

What would the best method be for this, should I make a "product" for each design and put it in as a component? then add notes in the notes area for that product? Or is there a better way to accomplish this using the knowledge base.

Note: these notes must be very easy to check for the employee, ideally they would eventually be able to be printed off with the manufacturing work order, or at least linked to from it.

Any help brainstorming this from someone who knows better would be awesome.

From your desctription it seems like using Variants is the best approach. You have a t-shirt.  One variant is colour.  For the colour you can choose you have characteristics like Yellow, Blue, Red (whatever).  And so on.

In the BOM you set that for variant colour, and characteristics Red, use component red colouring and so on.  Quite a lot of work to define all masterdata. Bet very important to be accurate and test.

In Manufacturing use work centers and operations in the BOM.  To an operation you can have a document or text describe or specify what to do.

Have the quality app installed, and create steps in the operation.   These steps can include a lot of different actions or just information the operator must follow or read.  They will not be able to finish the order unless they confirm all steps.

The Work Order tablet view is an excellent user interface for operators to have an overview of all steps and information.

To get more details, start with basic Odoo training video : https://www.odoo.com/slides/all  Go to the MRP courses

Also get more examples on Youtube.  You find a lot additional information from Odoo Partners that can be very helpfull.

Managing BoMs for product variants

Managing the steps using BoM, might be the best way to set this up. You can create a product for each design or you can just create variants with one BoM to manage it all.
