Does the daily digest mailing need a dedicated contact?

I've setup a test environment with my company called TEST COMPANY. With every digest mailing, a new contact is created with the name "TEST COPANY: Your daily digest".

So I've got 2 contacts:

TEST COMPANY

TEST COPANY: Your Daily Digest

Is the digest contact necessary for digest mailings to work properly?
