Is there any functional equivalent of Quickbooks Bank Account Register? Each entry in the register is either a debit or credit to the bank account. In this way it is easy to view the running balance by date of the bank account.

You can access the same information you get in a Bank Register report by using the Journal Items Menu.
Filter by Journal (or account) and date, then unhide the BALANCE field:
