Simple Questions

⇒ In a case of multi-level Bill of Material (using sub-BoM) with 4 alternatives, how does Odoo selects which “sub” Bill of Material to use ?

⇒ Can it depend on stock/availability, or a static preference order (e.g. 1. MwP 15cm, 2. MwP 10cm, 3. MwA, 4. SM) or can it only be selected manually ?

Background explanations

  1. Purchasing Mortadella Sausage from various Suppliers

There are 3 types of Mortadella Sausage we can purchase, we decide in function of prices (suppliers weekly promotions), delivery times and quality:

  • Mortadella with Pistachio (MwP),

  • Mortadella w. Almonds (MwA) and

  • Simple Mortadella (SM).

Behind the scenes, two regional farms produce these Mortadellas which have different product form factor:

Bio Pig Farm (B)                                                                                    Happy Pig Farm (H)

MwP 5kg Sausage, 15cm diameter                                        MwP 2kg Sausage, 10cm diameter

SM 6kg Sausage, 15cm diameter                                           MwA 4kg Sausage, 10cm diameter

We can chose from 4 suppliers:

Supplier 1,         Supplier 2,         Supplier 3,         Supplier 4

They stock the following products:

Supplier 1                      Supplier 2                      Supplier 3                      Supplier 4

MwP (B)                        MwP (H)                         MwA (H)                        SM (B)

SM (B)

-> As can be seen above, Supplier 1 and Supplier 4 have the exact same product in their catalogue (from the same Farm, same form factor).

Typical Ordering Workflow:

Our Chef becomes aware of a shortage in his stock (We have not yet set the Auto-reorder in Odoo), and wishes to order some Mortadella.

He makes a search in Odoo with the word “Mortadella” probably with a “Can be purchased” filter. He would like to see all the Mortadellas either...

With a drill down tree focused on product but with available Suppliers and their prices like this:

Mortadella with Pistachio

        MwP (B), 5kg, 15cm | Supplier 1 | 22€/Kg

        MwP (H), 2kg, 10cm | Supplier 2 | 23€/Kg

Mortadella w. Almonds

        MwA (H), 4kg, 10cm | Supplier 3 | 24€/Kg

Simple Mortadella

        SM (B), 6kg, 15cm | Supplier 1 | 19€/Kg

                                        | Supplier 4 | 20€/Kg

...Or from the provider’s perspective including prices and other attributes:

Supplier 1         MwP (B)         | 5kg | 15cm | 22€/Kg

                         SM (B)            | 6kg | 15cm | 19€/Kg

Supplier 2         MwP (H)         | 2kg | 10cm | 23€/Kg

Supplier 3         MwA (H)         | 4kg | 10cm | 24€/Kg

Supplier 4         SM (B)            | 6kg | 15cm | 20€/Kg

2. Making of the Mortadella Panino

Now the Caffe staff is going to prepare the panini in the morning, ahead of the lunch rush. They grab the ingredients and start a Routing…

The Bill of Material for the Mortadella Panino contains “Mortadella slices” as a sub Bill of Material. It consist of the manufacturing of 100g of “Mortadella Slices” that can be done with any of the 3 types of Mortadella (4 distinct products) that can be ordered and stocked.

The routing for this is taking the sausage available in stock and cut 4 slice for 15cm diameter types or 5 slices for the 10cm diameter ones.
