Thacker Caskets

Thacker Caskets got its start back in 1939, when Carl C. Thacker founded what was then called Old Dominion Casket Company in Washington, D.C. Carl was a natural at this business — not just selling caskets, but building relationships. He even became one of the first in the industry to photograph his caskets and show them to funeral homes by slideshow, a simple idea that made a big difference for families choosing final tributes for their loved ones.

After Carl’s passing in 1981, his wife Audrey and their son CJ stepped up to keep the business going. It wasn’t always easy, but with a lot of hard work and heart, they began to grow. In 1991, Thacker opened its first satellite distribution center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and kept expanding from there. Along the way, the company acquired other regional businesses and built strong partnerships, always sticking to the same core values Carl started with: honesty, quality, and service.

By 2005, Thacker had become more than a distributor—opening a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in Florence, Alabama. This facility allowed them to manufacture both the parts and the complete casket assemblies under one roof, something no other casket company in the country was doing. It marked a new chapter for Thacker, and the company kept investing in American-made craftsmanship, adding a steel stamping plant in 2019 to keep quality in-house and costs fair for their customers.

Today, Thacker Caskets is proud to still be family-owned and operated, with the third generation now involved in the business. They’ve grown into the largest family-owned funeral supply company in the United States, but their mission hasn’t changed since 1939: treat people right, make a good product, and never forget where you came from.
