The Odoo 15 Inventory and Manufacturing modules call everything products including materials/components needed to produce a final "product". This is confusing as hell. Is there any way to separate materials/components from finished products? Or is there an App that can do this logically?
Odoo is the world's easiest all-in-one management software.
It includes hundreds of business apps:
- CRM
- e-Commerce
- Accounting
- Inventory
- PoS
- Project
- MRP

The reason odoo does not separate them directly but leaves the option of product categories as stated by Khari is because a product can be both a component and a final product, and the same is true for vendors and customers, you can easily see only vendors, or only customers from the sales and purchase apps.
In a similar way if you want to see the finished products you can go to the sales module and go to products and you will have them all listed there (with default filter you will only see sellable products). And for the components... Well, anything can be a component, so you can check out the products through inventory module.
So you can work with what odoo offers you using modules and menus, or you can take Kharis aproach and use categories.
(Haven't tested that out on Odoo 15, but I assume that it works as Odoo 14)
Hello,
Put your components as not sellable. So it will be impossible to use them in a sale order.

Perhaps you could add a couple tags for “Component” and “Product”? You could then tag each product as one or the other (or both).
You can then create two filters for products, each containing one tag (share them if helpful for other users). Set your product tag filter as default.
Now you can easily change your list between products and components! And you can use the tags in other reports or dashboards.
Hope this helps,
Bill
Hi you can use product categories, one category for raw materials and the other for the finished products. Then when you go to products you just group them by categories.
We thought of that but we have dozens and dozens of material/component categories (not to mention the actual parts) and dozens and dozens of finished products. The way Oddo is now is so goofy. Why not just build products from components like everyone else on the planet? Oddo does the same thing with customers and vendors and calls them both contacts - also super confusing. So we found a great app that separates the two.
Now I wish there was something like that to separate materials/components for finished products.
