Pointing and redirecting are 2 different things when talking about domain and url.

Pointing:
Pointing means that the nameservers for domain A are pointed to the IP address of the nameservers for domain B. Domain B servers must be configured to accept domain A. Now, all traffic that formerly went to domain A servers now goes to domain B servers. Domain A servers can be unplugged- they do nothing any more.

Pointing must apply to all requests for the whole domain.

Redirecting:
Redirecting can be granular, page-by-page basis.
It is generally used to transfer a site's pages from one domain to another, say for a UK .com site changing to a .co.uk site. Some value (but not all) can be transferred if on a page-by-page basis.
