Hi,
I would like to know opinions on best practices for controlling product cost. Our company uses AVCO to track storable products. We routinely define a vendor and FOB price for each product. When the materials arrive at our warehouse, we adjust the inventory value by adding Landed Costs. This raises the average cost, adding the FOB price and the landed goods. All this works as expected and the cost on the product configuration page shows the updated cost.
Likewise, we track inventory valuation of finished goods through a BoM. The cost of components in the BoM may fluctuate up or down depending on the average cost of components at the time of manufacturing. We track the average cost of these finished goods.
I want to be able to control edit access to the product cost, because with one edit, I can erase the AVCO valuation and change it to whatever I like. This would have an adverse affect on stock valuation. I see a few options.
- make this a read-only field with (I believe) a python configuration
- hide this field from certain access groups
- add a warning next to "cost" in the product configuration such as (DO NOT EDIT)
Has anyone dealt with this issue and found a good solution to prevent unintentional edits that could inadvertently change inventory value?
I also operate my manufacturing the same way and would like to see a response to this question.
