If you apply a tax (usually % off total) to the total of the invoice, is the same as applying tax to each of the lines and sum it, if you have only 1 tax percentage for all of your products/services.
Mathematically you might get a little difference in the totals, because of rounding, but that should not be a big problem.
When there are different tax percentages, you must apply it to each line.
If you do not want to show the tax on the various reports, you can modify the reports to hide the tax per line, and show only the total of the taxes.
