Expected release date Odoo 9: June 2015.
There isn't a lot available of the features itself yet but there will be a new VOIP module. As you can see here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eWv79n4YuCc
Just as v8 focused on a major re-write of the Warehouse module v9 will focus on rewriting the accounting module. You can participate in the upcomming discussion here.
Odoo has been posting a lot of R&D posts on Twitter and Facebook with screenshots of things they are working on.

Update 8/06/2015: The most important news for Odoo 9 is that there will be two version for Odoo V9. Odoo Community and Odoo Enterprise. This is a pretty big game changer in Odoo 9 and directly stears Odoo from being fully open sourced to being partially open sourced and partially closed. The Enterprise Edition will contain a set of new apps on top of the Odoo community edition.

Second name of odoo is "Formally Buggy ERP", one version even not stable within a year, just fake release new version even current version not bing stable. Odoo knows False marketing. VOIP module is not new version, its just a module for odoo, version 8 had warehouse flow changes not a new version, it just a new module with different flow. v8 had new UI, is consider to be upgrade, v9 nothing a new fake, just fixing bugs and flow of accounting is nothing but module development. First make most stable. even till many issues for wkhtmlpdf, till hanging users on v8.... from v7 to v9, odoo just interested in own saas, left community away...
They're upgrading all modules to the new API, refactoring the code and even re-writing some modules from scratch. While they didn't do a to good job on Odoo 8 (since they outsourced it to India) it seems that V9 has a godo shot to be better and much more stable. We'll see what this brings. Lets not forget that the code behind Odoo is very big, diverse and Odoo is still young.

The POS is not nearly ready for a restaurant with more than 10 customers a day..
The workflow and the Buttons are not good enough to be fast in ordering, special wishes and revert wrong klicks....
The minimum you would need are things like: If i order a steak there is a forced popup (or change in the orderbuttons) that forces the waiter to choose how much it should be done(medium, rare .....) or wich side the customer wishes..
