This information can be used by companies in different scenarios. Some of them are:
To identify people living near the office in times of an emergency
To cross check "mileage" claims when expense reports are submitted, if employees are being reimbursed for business use of personal vehicle. Some countries have rules where the distance between work and office is not allowed for the purposes of claiming mileage reimbursements.
