Do I have to learn postgresql in order to better use openerp? What are the downsides if I don't? If I have to, how do I beat the learning curve? time is not really my friend. thanks

It depends on how many users will be using OpenERP. The better you know how to manage PostgreSQL, the better OpenERP will behave. In the end... go ahead and buy a PostgreSQL book, they are worth reading it
