seperating product numbers from descriptions

I am trying to figure out how to separate product numbers and descriptions of those products. The issue is when I enter a sales order the complete description of the product is included in both the product number and description fields. I would like to enter the product number in the product category and have the description populate the description field.

That would mean you would need a product category for every product which kind of defeats the purpose.

You could override the view so that the default code (which would hold you product code) is a separate field
