Contacts app has Clients, Suppliers, internal contacts.... can i add a new category/type of contact?

Simplest way is to probably to add a field to identify the new type of contact. Then you can add a filter and/or a new menu option to display these contacts.
You also have the option of using the Tags field on the Contact. You can filter on Tags too.
