I have been looking through the calenders and it seems as though they don't provide the same info. The calender under messages seems to only display meetings. The my tasks calender just tasks. I really need to be able to see everything on the same one.

Is there a way to do this?

Yes, "calendar views" are per Model: they just display that module's documents in a calendar. So, as you found out, it's not what you would expect from a Calendar.

But there may be hope:

The super_calendar community module allows you to have a unified view of your chosen models.

I also found the Shared Calendar module, that you may find useful.

This is a very serious design flaw in an otherwise decent ERP. Is there a special reason that can justify adding soooo many more steps, clicks, etc to a persons workload thoughout his day?? This could just be a deciding factor for me on whether to implement OpenERP or another.

I'm sorry you didn't find my answer useful. And other than these options yes, currently a proper calendar is a missing feature in OpenERP.
