Hi there,

I have a question about creating BOMs in Odoo 15 that concerns both processing raw material and maintaining traceability through multi-step manufacturing.

Our process begins with cutting large pieces of irregularly shaped raw material into multiple intermediary components which need to be classified by dimension before being manufactured into different end products. Each of the final products will have a unique serial number that requires traceability back to their source material.

For example: Raw Material piece A will be cut into 20 pieces of equal length. Then, because there are variances in the raw material, each cut piece's height and width will be measured and the piece will classified based on its dimensions - Large Component, Medium Component, Small Component.

Each of these intermediary components will be used in BOMs for one or more types of final products:

  • Large Component will be used to create Product 1, Product 5, or Product 6 - with a unique serial number linked back to Raw Material piece A
  • Medium Component will be used to create Product 2 or Product 4 - with a unique serial number linked back to Raw Material piece A
  • Small Component will be used to create Product 3 or Product 7 - with a unique serial number linked back to Raw Material piece A

To summarize:

  • Step 1 - Primary cutting of Raw Material  produces 20 pieces
  • Step 2 - QA measurement of 20 pieces classifies them as 10 Large Components, 7 Medium Components, and 3 Small Components
  • Step 3 - BOM for Product 1 consumes 1 Large Component
  • Step 4 - Product 1 requires traceability back to the Raw Material in step 1

What is the best approach for configuring our BOMs that accounts for the above considerations?

First you can have a Manufacturing Order for your components-> where you can be consuming the raw materials- You may or may not work with Bill of Materials depending on the fact that if you have a standard formula for your components/by products.

Next you can consume your components to product your End Product for which it is more likely to have a standard consumption so you can have BOM defined for it.

Tracebility is always maintained. 

You would only need to take care of setting up the routes for the products so that your manufacturing trigger points are automated in case if you want it that way or you can always do it manually. without routes.
