Pour le renforcement et l’amélioration de la sécurité de la navigation dans les eaux sous sa juridiction et conformément à l’article 5 de la Convention SOLAS, le Sénégal, a mis à niveau en termes d'équipements ( aides à la navigation : bouées, phares , infrastructures de sécurité) son Service de Sécurité Maritime géré par la Subdivision des Phares et Balises. L'objectif est de lui permettre de répondre aux besoins de sécurité et de sureté des navires qui fréquentent ses eaux, ses estuaires et ses ports.La Subdivision des Phares et Balises est une structure de l’Etat dont la gestion est confiée au Port Autonome de Dakar par une convention qui date de 1977.
