Apology if I misinterpret your question, but my answer would be:
- Read the next sequence using next_by_id or next_by_code method
- Write the resulting valu into the field that you want (via create or write method).
You can find multitude samples in the addons, one example would be: addons/account_sequence/account_sequence.py
