I was able to download the commnunity version from the Odoo website, but when I tried to start it nothing happened. I can find the files on my drive but I am not familiar enough with Odoo to try and manually start it. Can anyone help me.

As you said the files are on your system which means you have downloaded Odoo.
Now the concern is what OS are you using and what type of installation you have done?
Have you fetched the source code from Github or you have used the deb version?
There can be some dependencies missing which might be causing the working of Odoo.
Kindly provide details so that a proper solution can be given.

Here are the installation steps for odoo 10 version. please follow instruction. If you are using linux machine than you have to install dependencies which needs to install odoo 10.
