Question: How to add a product to a BoM without its variants? The product should be used for a manufacturing order nomatter of its specific variant.

Background: We buy used laptops, refurbish them and sell them. During refurbishing we change their configuration such as RAM and HDD. We buy them in various configurations but sell them only in a few limited configurations. For instance we always replace the HDD by SSD and consequently in ecommerce we only want to offer laptops with SSD. Also we offer software variants which apply to the sold product only but not to the bought product. Therefore we use two different products in Odoo.

We want to use Odoo Inventory to track stock of bought and sold products and Manufacturing module for refurbishing. In the BoM of the to-be-sold product I would like to add the bough product. But Odoo forces me to choose a specific variant. Instead I would like to add the product to the BoM *without* choosing a certain variant. After all, the variant is changed during the very same manufacturing step and therefore *any* variant can go into manufacturing. Any idea how to achieve this?

We use Odoo 12.0 CE.
