Can scales work stand-alone with Odoo when they are NOT CONNECTED TO A CHECKOUT POS and print a label that is scanned later at the checkout?

Here's the example:

In Belgium we have SUPERMARKETS (like Carrefour and Delhaize) that use separate scales in the fruit & vegetable department and in the meat- and cheese-counters.

Customers pass through the supermarket taking their products.

At the fruit & vegetable department they take their fruits and vegetables and they weigh them themselves by selecting the product on the scale’s touchscreen and printing a label with a barcode, product name, weight, unit price and total price for each product separately.

At the meat- and cheese-counters they order a certain weight of several products. The ordered products are weighed by an employee and a ticket with a summary of the ordered products is printed by the scale and fixed to the bag with meat or cheese.

When the customer proceeds to the checkout these tickets from the scales are scanned (amongst all other products the customer has picked in the supermarket) in the POS-app at the checkout and the details from the scale-tickets are added to the total ticket in the POS-app and the customers pays for all products at once.

Is this possible to setup out-of-the-box with Odoo Online?

Hi,

No, Odoo Online does not support this use case out-of-the-box. Here are the key points to understand:

Odoo POS supports barcode scanning, including standard product barcodes at checkout, this works by default without any customization.

Standalone scales that print barcode labels with embedded weight or price are not natively supported. Odoo POS cannot interpret such barcodes automatically.

Odoo Online does not allow custom modules, which means you cannot implement the custom barcode parsing logic needed to decode labels from standalone scales.

To support this workflow, custom development is required - specifically to parse barcodes generated by standalone scales (e.g., EAN13 with price/weight encoding).

Odoo POS can work with directly connected weighing scales, where the cashier weighs items at the checkout counter and the weight is automatically applied to the order.

To implement either custom barcode logic or use integrated weighing hardware, you need to move to Odoo.sh or an on-premise installation, where custom modules and hardware integration are allowed.

Hope it helps.
