I'm hoping someone could help me decide if Odoo is a good match for my needs, and a strategy on how I would go about configuring and deploying Odoo. Currently, I am a one-man repair shop, but expect to expand to 8 employees within 2 years. These are my wants and needs:

Customer creates a case through an online portal. Case # is assigned to this specific repair

Customer mails in item to be repaired. Able to be notified when tracking # says it will arrive

Receive item. Print a sticky label with case #, and customer name to stick on item

Through portal, customer can see progress of repair

Customer is able to purchase upgrades and other additional services

When item is repaired, customer can pay for repair through portal

Print postage to ship back to customer. Watch tracking # to make sure package arrives

Integrate with Asterisk so a customer's info pops up when they call, and easy to call them from their account

Any info and opinions greatly appreciated!

Certainly Odoo can do everything that you are asking for. Some customizing will need to be done likely with the postage creation/ printing. If you haven't already, setup a demo copy on the Odoo website and verify that it has some of the function for you. I'm sure Odoo would work with you to help customize it, or anyone in this Odoo community could also provide customizations. I'd be happy to chat if you'd like.   We're located in Ohio.

Robert - to continue on your additional question about Odoo being overwhelming.   It is, and yes the lack of documentation is at time frustrating.   I'd recommend getting with someone that knows how to develop what you need, however if you want to take the time to learn and research, this might be a good starting point:   http://www.odooclass.com/   My company is not at all involved with this project, but it's one of the best things going right now to see hands on use of Odoo.

We're not a Odoo partner, but can help implement as well as many other users in this forum.    Play, ask around, and if you need to get a professional involved, find someone close to you.

Thanks for the replies!

It's good to know Odoo can (Eventually) do everything I need. I did a lot of research, and Odoo looked the best. As I'm a startup, and money is very tight now, I can put off the postage customizations (And many more. I have lots of ideas, and I'm glad to know Odoo can be customized) until after I'm in business. However, I'm a bit overwhelmed, and don't know where to start. I already set up a test machine, and it seems to work fine, but I don't know how to configure basic Odoo for my business. I'm concerned that I might make bad/wrong choices, which may affect things down the road. Just like assembling model cars and large furniture, I hesitate to do certain things without documentation. I haven't yet found any documentation that could tell me how to configure Odoo to match my specific business. I just don't know how to start with Odoo. I still have a license for CommitCRM, which is one of my Plan B's, and I successfully used vtiger for a while, but I'd prefer to give Odoo a try. CRM/ERP is the last piece of my business puzzle, and I'd like to be running within the month.

Are there any walkthroughs for setting up Odoo to a business? Maybe a good video? Any recommended books (I found very few on the latest Odoo)?

Thanks again!

Odoo is flexible enough to meet all your needs, but not necessarily out of the box. Especially when it comes to integrations. Like Carlton said, you should setup a test installation. If your not familiar with developing in python, then I would suggest you find someone who is to work with on your project.

As with any business system, plan for a long development and implementation process. I'm currently rushing a manufacturing company to be done in less than 8 months. That said, this sort of thing should probably be done over the course of 2 years.

In general, my process is currently:

1. Document all the information being tracked and the workflows used in the company.

2. Configure the same in Odoo with custom built modules.

3. Create reports to view the information.

4. Test the models and views in real world examples. See how well it holds up in your company.

5. Make necessary changes and implement on a small scale.

6. Implement throughout and train appropriately.

Since your a one man shop, you can easily adjust your business processes to what will work in Odoo, which will make the task easier. All that said, at some point you will want to work with a developer/consultant on some of the more complicated components. They will likely charge an hourly rate, and you will probably pay a monthly rate for odoo hosting/support. However, this will probably be less, all told, than the cost of a non-opensource saas platform.
