I recently completed my CIPS Level 4 Certificate in Procurement and Supply. During my studies, I learned the importance of defining business needs before choosing an ERP system. I am now exploring Odoo and want to understand how to select the right features for my business.

Every organization has different goals. Some focus on procurement, others on finance or supplier management. The first step is to review current processes and find performance gaps. These gaps help identify the essential ERP features.

I would like to know how others identify the right ERP functions. How do you decide which features are most important? If anyone has used CIPS learning material or resources like Pass4Future for CIPS ERP learning material, please share your experience.

Good question, Tony.

The best way to pick the right Odoo features is to start with what your business actually does day to day. Write down your main processes, things like purchasing, inventory, finance, or customer follow-ups and note where the bottlenecks are.

Once you have that list, it’s easier to match them with the right Odoo apps. For example, Purchase and Inventory work great together for procurement, while Accounting ties in naturally for supplier payments. I’d suggest testing the core modules first before adding anything extra.

Also, talk to the people who use those processes daily, they’ll quickly tell you what’s essential and what’s just “nice to have.” That approach usually leads to a much smoother ERP rollout.
