From Sales > Sales Orders I am able to link "Order Reference" to "Customer"
From Inventory > Lots/Serial numbers I am able to link "Lot/Serial Number" to "Sales Orders"

From the Lot/ Serial Number (Inventory > Products > Lots/ Serial Number) select the records and export (Action > export).
You can add the fields Sales Orders (sale_order_ids) and Sales Orders/Customer (sale_order_ids/partner_id) to the data export template

Am not certain why that might happen, maybe you want to double check the customer field included in the export (Sales Orders/Customer (sale_order_ids/partner_id)). In my testing the customer was included in the export

I have tried what you just described and exported data only shows the Sales order ID number but I get no data for the customer. I know that the customer is linked to the Sales order ID since I can export that relationship from the Sales app.
