Is there anyway in Odoo 17 sh to calculate/map sales tax without using avalara or taxcloud? Every ERP/ecommerce I have used had a way to do this natively.

I understand that everything would have to be setup manually, and that's fine. We are just not interested in paying a crazy monthly fee just to calculate the sales tax

EDIT: The title of this post got changed. I do not want to calculate tax manually. I want to setup the mapping manually then the tax will get calculated automatically.

Hi Sean,
I was in the same exact position and ended up developing my own app that connects to a MUCH cheaper api. ($99 per month)

I am publishing the app on the Odoo App Store in a few days and I think it might fit what you were looking for. Shoot me an email at sanford@aglow.dev if you are interested, or just keep an eye out towards the end of this week. It’s called “TaxAvenger”

There is also a new app named TaxAvenger that is a cheaper alternative to Avalara or Taxcloud. It requires a little more initial setup on the Odoo side, but it does handle address-specific tax rates like you described. It won’t file your tax return for you, but it gets all the rate info and allows you to setup each state you need to collect taxes in.

Thank you for the reply.

If the tax rate is applied to customer, how would the correct tax be calculated and applied to a new customer that is not yet in the system?

Here in Florida, there is the state tax of 6%, then there is the discretionary tax based on the county (zip code); it typically ranges from .5% - 2% that is in addition to the state tax. These 2 taxes need to be separated for filing purposes every month. This may seem complicated, but it is really quite simple, we currently to this ourselves with a different system that we will be transitioning away from.

While we only recommend this for Users who have extremely simple Sales Tax needs (as the penalties for getting it wrong are significant) you can setup your own Fiscal Positions and assign them to Customers and/or Sales Orders.

https://www.odoo.com/documentation/17.0/applications/finance/accounting/taxes/fiscal_positions.html

For example:

The default sales tax for your state for a product 6%.  This will be assigned in the Customer Taxes field for the Product. You also charge 7.25% for some Customers.

Define a Fiscal Position which replaces "Sales Tax 6%" with "Sales Tax 7.25%".  Assign this fiscal position to a customer under the tab "Sales & Purchase" in the section Fiscal Information.

With this setup "Sales Tax 6%" will be substituted automatically by "Sales Tax 7.25%" when creating a quotation/sales order/invoice for this customer.
