In OE V13 you can define a product with a BOM.

If the product is Consumable you can associate to it a BOM of type KIT and then all moves are performed on the component of the kits not the kit itself

If the product is Stockable you can associate to it a Manufacturing BOM and then all moves are performed on the main product.

I have a use case where we are sending a kit with a serial number (therefore stockable and Manufacturing BOM) to customers

Customer can open the kit and remove and send back an item that we will replace; the kit SN remains unchanged.

Problem is that only the kit is sent by Odoo the items are only moved from Stock->Production) -> we cannot return them and associate them to the kit SN

Any idea is welcome
