I want to know what is the purpose of the "Account Groups" in the Accounting Group, after activating the Developer Mode > Accounting App > Configuration > Account Groups > create related account groups, these groups have nothing to do!!! system logic wise, as I'm certified Oracle and SAP consultant, these groups must support the following points:

Used as a parameter in the Group by in the CoA view, why this is important?

because, Odoo doesn't support account code automatic generation as per group property, every time when create new account, you have either to go to the external following-up Excel sheets and see from there, which doesn't make sense! or go from the CoA view and search for the next code which is not an easy task, especially when the "Account Type" which is the only property supported, is not effective.

Hi,

In Odoo, the “Account Groups” feature under Developer Mode is primarily designed for organizational and reporting purposes, but it’s often underutilized and lacks the full logical integration found in ERP systems like Oracle or SAP. In its current state, Account Groups in Odoo mainly serve as a way to categorize accounts visually in the Chart of Accounts (CoA) — allowing you to structure accounts under logical sections (like Assets, Liabilities, Income, etc.) for better readability and manual navigation. However, these groups do not currently drive any functional logic such as automatic account code generation, grouping in the CoA tree view, or influencing financial reports directly.

Ideally, as you pointed out, Account Groups should serve as a controlling structure for automated account code generation and grouping logic. For instance, when creating a new account, the system could automatically assign the next available code within the group’s defined code range, reducing manual dependency and error risks. This is standard practice in more advanced ERP systems, but in Odoo, that automation is missing unless you add custom development.

In summary, Account Groups in Odoo are mostly cosmetic and informational rather than functional. To achieve the kind of logical linkage and automation you’re expecting — such as using groups for “Group By” operations in the CoA or driving account code generation — you’d need to extend the model with custom logic or use third-party modules that enhance the accounting structure and coding sequence behavior.

Hello Kenan,

I know also that the groups are also used for the access of the customer to the website. For example, some customers (B2B) could have access to some products (Group B2B) and others customers (B2C) have access to others products (Group B2C). It's just a an example.

Hello Leveau!

My question is not about Product Groups, it's about Account Groups!

Hello Kenan,

Account Groups in Odoo serve several purposes that enhance the organization and readability of financial reports. Here’s a brief overview and some steps to make the most out of Account Groups:

Firstly, understand that Account Groups are primarily used to structure the Chart of Accounts (CoA) in a logical manner. This helps in organizing accounts into hierarchies, making them easier to navigate and manage.

To address your concern about account code generation and grouping:

  - Account Groups don’t directly support automatic account code generation. This is mainly because Odoo aims to provide flexibility in how accounts are structured and coded, which varies significantly across different legal and operational environments.

  - However, you can manually set a prefix or a pattern for account codes within a group to maintain consistency. When creating a new account, reference the pattern established by the related account group to ensure sequential numbering.

  - For easier management and to avoid external tools, consider using the 'Parent Account' feature to create a hierarchical view of your accounts within the CoA, which can also aid in finding the next available code.

  - Utilize the 'Group by' functionality in the CoA view to filter accounts by their group. This can help in quickly identifying the structure and ensuring that new accounts are created within the correct group.

There's no option in the Group By functionality contains Account Group in the CoA view.

Hello Kenan,

Account Groups in Odoo play a crucial role in organizing financial accounts within the Chart of Accounts. They serve to structure and categorize accounts, which is particularly useful for reporting and analysis purposes. Your concern about the lack of automatic account code generation based on these groups is indeed a valid point. Here's a brief overview of why Account Groups are important and a workaround for the issue you've highlighted:

  • Account Groups provide a hierarchical structure to the Chart of Accounts, making it easier to navigate and manage.

  • They are essential for financial reporting, as they allow for the grouping of accounts in financial statements according to their nature (assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses).

  • While Odoo does not natively support automatic account code generation based on Account Groups, you can achieve a similar outcome by using a custom module or script. This would involve predefining your account numbering logic and automatically applying it when new accounts are created within specific groups.

Implementing such a solution would require some development effort. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, you might consider seeking assistance from experienced Odoo developers.
