In Odoo 18.2, managing Units of Measure (UoM) in the Bill of Materials (BoM) is a standard feature, and it's quite useful when your purchase unit differs from your manufacturing unit.

Here’s how to properly set this up:

✅ Step-by-step: Use Different Units in BoM vs Purchase

1. Enable Units of Measure

Make sure the Units of Measure feature is enabled:

  • Go to Settings.
  • Under the Inventory section, enable Units of Measure.
  • Click Save.

2. Configure Units on the Product

Go to Inventory > Products, and open your product.

  • Purchase Unit of Measure:
    • Set the UoM field to the unit used in manufacturing (e.g., Kilogram).
    • Set the Purchase UoM field (below it) to the unit used when buying (e.g., Box or Pack).

✅ Odoo will automatically handle the conversion as long as both UoMs are in the same category (e.g., Weight, Volume, Units, etc.).

3. Adjust the Bill of Materials (BoM)

Go to Manufacturing > Bill of Materials, and select the BoM for your product.

  • In the Components list, enter the quantity based on the UoM used in manufacturing.
  • The system will use the base UoM of the product here, not the purchase UoM.

4. Set Conversion Rules (Optional)

If needed, you can customize or create new UoMs with specific conversion ratios:

  • Go to Inventory > Configuration > Units of Measure.
  • Create or edit a UoM.
    • Choose a UoM Category (must match with the product's main UoM).
    • Set the Conversion Factor (e.g., 1 Box = 10 Kg → factor = 10.0).
