I installed odoo 19 on digitalOcean (Ubuntu). I've setup IMAP server. It works fine. 

I'm trying to set up an SMTP server to send email. I've completed all the necessary configuration steps, but I'm getting a timeout error when checking the test connection.

//odoo logs 
2026-02-24 14:12:49,054 1 WARNING odoo odoo.http: No response received. Check server address and port number.

timed out



#: nc -zv smtp.fastmail.com 465

Connection to smtp.fastmail.com port 465 [tcp/urd] succeeded!


 Using the same settings, I configured the email client on my phone and on my laptop. Everything works fine.

What am I doing wrong? What can I check? What logs should I look at?

I even tried to increase the SMTP_TIMEOUT https://github.com/odoo/odoo/blob/19.0/odoo/addons/base/models/ir_mail_server.py#L61

I set it up to 180 but got another error:

2026-02-24 15:46:38,330 1 WARNING ? odoo.service.server: Thread <Thread(odoo.service.http.request.139918806001344, started 139918806001344)> virtual real time limit (142/120s) reached.

Hello Kunjan

Unfortunately thats not help. I didn't get encryption mode error. I got SMTP_TIMEOUT error.

Guys,  Ogtay ALiyev,  Kunjan Patel! I'm so thankful. You both were correct: 

I had closed port by default!

sudo ufw allow out 465/tcp
sudo ufw allow out 587/tcp

That helps on the first stage


Second problem is in Digital Ocean! It blocks default SMTP ports. How to check: 

If this command hags then you have closed port by provider

openssl s_client -connect smtp.gmail.com:465 -quiet


Thanx to FastMail they have SMTP proxy which works on 80/443 port 

smtps-proxy.fastmail.com

DigitalOcean often blocks outbound SMTP traffic by default.

Even if:

nc works

Sometimes encrypted SMTP traffic gets filtered silently.

Check in:

DigitalOcean Dashboard → Networking → Firewalls

Make sure:

  • Outbound traffic is allowed

  • No egress rule blocking 465 or 587

Also check:

sudo ufw status

If UFW is active, ensure outbound is allowed:

sudo ufw allow out 465/tcp
sudo ufw allow out 587/tcp

I hope you are doing well

Increase Odoo worker timeout in odoo.conf:
limit_time_real = 300   # Try in command line
limit_time_cpu = 300
If still fails, try port 587 + STARTTLS — DigitalOcean often throttles port 465.
