Hello,

The Manufacturing Setup

We have a company that manufactures ceramic tiles using different raw materials. The tiles are manufactured by Pallets. One pallet can hold a different number of tiles depending on the tile size. For example, it can hold 13 No. 60mm square tiles and 15 No. 60mm rectangular tiles. The tiles are sold in units e.g. 1000 tiles (units).

The Problem

There are three options that appear to solve the problem of managing different units of measure in manufacturing and sales. These are:

  1. Use a custom Unit of Measure to define a pallet containing a varying number of tiles for each product.
  2. Use Lots to manage the number of tiles in each lot.
  3. Use a Package to hold different numbers of tiles (is it even feasible??)

Currently, we are using the option number 1 above.

The Question

Are we doing it the right way? or is there a more appropriate method to manage the different quantities?

Thank you.

Some advise: Do it easy and logic.

1 tile = 1 unit (Be very carefull with using custom UOM.  Stick to ISO UOM, so you are sure not to get in trouble and misunderstandings).  You will the invoice no of tiles. And cost will by one tile.

If you NEVER split a box, you might define in the description of a product that it is a box. Then one box = 1 unit.  You will then never manage individual tiles in you business.

Tiles are packed in Boxes.   Assume you only sell full boxes then use box as Product Package. Product package is used for sales.  You migt also define full pallet as product package for sale.  You can have price list for packages.

But also define Box and pallets as Delivery Package.   Delivery packages can be moved around in warehouse, be related to a storage category than can have strategy for placement and qty defined by product, and shipped full or split.  (I am not sure that in Odoo you can assign boxes on to pallets).

Lot number are for traceability.  If you need traceability back to lot numbers (batches) of raw materials, use lot numbers. Else, avoid it. Delivery packages have unique numbers and will also give you traceability back to manufacturing orders.

Hope this helps you in decissions.

Thank you for your remarks. I shall keep these tips in mind when configuring.

Apologies for late reply. I did not have to set it up that way. We ultimately set it up to keep track of the inventory in units i.e. number of tiles.

I hope you have successfully completed your setup. If you need any assistance, let me know.

Regards.
